Join the High Museum in Atlanta for a captivating multi-week studio class that delves into nontraditional art-making materials associated with sculptural practices. Participants will pay close attention to found, discarded, or seemingly unimportant materials such as rope, wood, wire, and other found objects, placing emphasis on the creative process and exploration.
Inspired by the museum’s Folk and Self-Taught Art collection, attendees will examine notable works, including Lonnie Holley’s intriguing wall and floor assemblage, Blown Out Black Mama’s Belly, and R. A. Miller’s dynamic metal and wood cutout construction, Cow.
Under the guidance of instructor Daniel Mantilla, participants will explore the artistic possibilities inherent in these materials. Through a series of prompts and challenges, they will arrange and assemble their unique three-dimensional artworks. The class will foster a collaborative environment where students can share their sculptures, engage in discussions, receive professional feedback from the instructor, and celebrate their creative processes together.
