Exclusive Sneak Peek: Kim Chong Hak – The Brush Behind Seoraksan’s Beauty!

Experience the Artistry of Kim Chong Hak at the High Museum in Atlanta

The High Museum is proud to present Kim Chong Hak, Painter of Seoraksan, the inaugural American museum exhibition featuring the renowned South Korean master painter Kim Chong Hak (born 1937, Sinuiju, Korea). Members of the museum will have the exclusive opportunity to explore this captivating exhibition first on Thursday, April 10, before it opens to the general public.

Kim Chong Hak began his career as an abstract painter in the 1960s but later distanced himself from the South Korean art scene’s embrace of Western-style abstraction, which he believed was a reaction to the national sorrow stemming from the hardships of the past. In the late 1970s, he found solace and inspiration in Gangwon Province, the region surrounding Mount Seorak. It was here that he sought a different artistic outlook, moving away from the monochromatic works that dominated Korean art at the time in favor of a highly expressive style. Throughout his life, he has immersed himself in the interpretation of Mount Seorak’s majestic landscapes, cultivating a deep emotional and artistic connection to the natural environment during years of self-imposed isolation.
