“Good plays are always in conversation with the audience, but they are also in conversation with other plays. In the case of Something Moving and The Mountaintop, by Katori Hall, the lives of two of Atlanta’s most famous native sons, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Maynard Jackson, are explored, focusing on each man’s greatness without ignoring their humanity.” – Pearl Cleage, Playwright

Award-winning author and playwright Pearl Cleage examines the election of Maynard Jackson, Atlanta’s first African American mayor, through the perspective of an artist and insider. Cleage served as Jackson’s press secretary during his campaign and followed him into City Hall for two years as Director of Communications. By recounting the story of this 1973 landmark election, Cleage creates characters from her own experiences during this transformative moment in the city’s history. This retrospective invites reflection on the meaning of leadership and the kind of future to aspire to.
