Johnson Lowe Gallery presents Sleeping Giants, an exhibition that pays homage to the inventiveness and originality of three artists who were overlooked or marginalized in the mainstream art history: Herbert Creecy, Thornton Dial, and Sam Glankoff. The exhibition showcases their distinctive bodies of work that contributed to the language and expressive power of modern art. Sleeping Giants is on view from May 18 to July 1, 2023.
Sleeping Giants is curated by Donovan Johnson, the new director of Johnson Lowe Gallery, who has a vision of making Atlanta an art destination and highlighting the diversity and richness of Black art and culture. The exhibition is also part of a larger initiative called The Alchemists, which is a series of exhibitions and programs that reflect on the transmutation of Black experiences and ancestral legacy. The Alchemists was launched in March 2023 and will run until December 2023.
