This course offers an opportunity to capture the dynamic energy of the human figure in charcoal. Participants will draw from mannequins and live models, focusing on the essence of a pose and developing initial sketches into finished figure drawings that convey form and weight.
Week 1: Participants will begin by drawing from the shoulder and elbow, making large, light, and loose marks. The week will focus on simple gesture drawings designed to capture the action line, followed by learning to measure the height and width of a pose to create an angular silhouette.
Week 2: The session will commence with gesture drawing warm-ups. Participants will then employ contour lines to transform their angular silhouettes into poses with structure and depth. Emphasis will be placed on identifying large forms such as the pelvis, ribcage, and skull, as well as observing the curvature of limbs throughout the drawing process.
Week 3: This week will concentrate on describing the structure of the head, feet, and hands. Participants will explore light, medium, and dark tones within the figure, practicing the clear and simple conveyance of each shadow shape.
Week 4: The final session will integrate skills from previous lessons to create a longer-form drawing.
The event will take place at the High Museum in Atlanta.
