Week 1: The course begins with an introduction to various drawing methods, including contour drawing. Participants will work from observation to create designs using pencil, charcoal, and white chalk on a variety of papers.
Week 2: Explore the galleries of the High Museum, drawing inspiration from the museum’s collection. In the studio, participants will focus on adding value to their compositions by creating visual textures with graphite, charcoal, and Conté crayons.
Week 3: Start with warm-up exercises using colored pencils for line drawings. As the week progresses, attendees will experiment with layering and color mixing techniques to achieve painterly effects with dry media. The class will culminate in creating expressive works featuring chalk and oil pastels, drawing from life.
Week 4: Participants will shift their focus to drawing with a brush, using ink to convey value, texture, and depth in their artwork.
Week 5: This week will emphasize watercolor techniques, integrating watercolor into line drawings made with ink and pencil. Participants can choose to work on a large drawing or develop a small series, inspired by life, memory, or imagination.
