Throughout her illustrious career, Bernadette Peters has dazzled audiences and critics with her performances on stage, film, television, in concerts, and on recordings. She has garnered numerous accolades, including three Tony Awards, a Golden Globe, four Emmy nominations, and four Grammy Award nominations, in addition to a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Best known for her stage work, Peters recently concluded a highly successful West End debut in the Cameron Mackintosh production of Old Friends, which celebrates the life and work of Stephen Sondheim. It has been announced that the production will transfer to Broadway for the 2025 season.
Peters has starred as Dolly Gallagher Levi in the hit musical, Hello, Dolly!, and also took part in City Center’s Encores! production, A Bed and a Chair: A New York Love Affair, featuring the music of Stephen Sondheim with orchestrations by Wynton Marsalis. Prior to that, she lighted up Broadway in Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music and Follies.
Her accolades include both the Tony Award and Drama Desk Award for her performance in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, Song and Dance. She won another Tony Award for her role in Annie Get Your Gun. Peters received Tony nominations for her outstanding performances in Sam Mendes’ critically acclaimed revival of Gypsy, Neil Simon’s The Goodbye Girl, Stephen Sondheim’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Sunday in the Park with George, Jerry Herman’s Mack and Mabel, and Leonard Bernstein’s On The Town. Additionally, she earned a Drama Desk nomination for her unforgettable portrayal of the Witch in Sondheim’s Into the Woods.
Her television credits are equally impressive, including her recent work on the Apple TV+ series, “High Desert”, and a guest role on the NBC series, “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist”, which garnered her an Emmy nomination. The popular series was adapted into a TV movie musical titled “Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas” for The Roku Channel. Other notable TV appearances include “Katy Keene”, “The Good Fight”, and Amazon Prime’s award-winning series, “Mozart in the Jungle”.
Peters has also appeared on NBC’s “Smash”, ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy”, and “Ugly Betty”. She starred in the Lifetime TV movie Living Proof and has appeared in over 30 films throughout her distinguished career. She received a Golden Globe award for her memorable performance in “Pennies From Heaven”, alongside a diverse filmography that includes titles such as The Jerk, The Longest Yard, and tick, tick…BOOM!.
Peters has released six solo albums, including the Grammy-nominated I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight, Sondheim, Etc.: Bernadette Peters Live at Carnegie Hall, and Bernadette Peters Loves Rodgers & Hammerstein, in addition to numerous original Broadway cast recordings.
Active in philanthropy, Peters dedicates her time and talents to many charitable events, particularly those benefiting Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. She co-founded the “pet project” Broadway Barks with Mary Tyler Moore, an annual dog and cat adoption event that supports shelter animals in New York City and the tri-state area.
The American Theater Wing recognized her efforts, honoring her with the Isabelle Stevenson Tony Award, which acknowledges an individual from the theatre community who has made substantial contributions to humanitarian and charitable organizations.
In November 2022, during her time in London, Peters co-hosted West End Woofs, a sister organization to Broadway Barks, along with her friend Elaine Paige. This event marked the first of its kind in the UK, promoting unity among animal shelters and rescue groups.
A New York Times best-selling author, Peters has penned three children’s books: “Broadway Barks”, “Stella is a Star”, and “Stella and Charlie: Friends Forever”, with proceeds benefiting Broadway Barks. She resides in New York and Los Angeles with her rescue dogs, Charlie and Rosalia.
