Participants will learn the fundamentals of composing and crafting haiku in English at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. The workshop will explore the power of imagery to evoke emotion and how artful juxtaposition can lead to the haiku (ah-ha) moment. Discussions will cover seasonal awareness and the concept of kigo, enhancing participants’ understanding of nature’s influence on poetry. Additionally, the workshop will focus on the human experience, seeking moments—both serious and humorous—that reflect the essence of being human.

About the Instructor
Before relocating to Atlanta, Tom Painting taught literature and creative writing at The School of the Arts in Rochester. Currently, he instructs junior high humanities at the Paideia School. Tom has been involved in the haiku community for the past twenty-five years and served as an associate editor for The Heron’s Nest haiku journal for five years. His interests include outdoor activities, reading, and making slow but steady progress on the acoustic guitar.
