This comprehensive introduction to drawing offers a variety of techniques and materials. Participants will experiment with lines, mark making, shapes, texture, tone, and composition to create drawings from observation while learning to apply design principles to support their compositions.
Incorporating the teachings of Betty Edwards, author of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (1979), participants will build skills through exercises in contour drawing and depictions of negative space. This course allows individuals to draw from works in the museum’s collection, still life props, and photo references, all under the guidance of a professional teaching artist at the High Museum in Atlanta.
- Week 1: The class will begin with an introduction and an outline of the drawing materials and techniques that will be explored. Participants will then experiment with contour drawings, lines, and mark making.
- Week 2: The significance of space and value will be explored to enhance understanding of negative space.
- Week 3: Participants will create visual texture and experiment with composition while working on observational drawings.
- Week 4: The final week will focus on completing drawings using a combination of previously explored techniques. The course will conclude with a discussion about participants’ work and a reflection on the learning experience.
