The High Museum of Art in Atlanta is offering a workshop focused on the principles of design through the medium of collage. Participants will have the opportunity to create collages using torn and cut shapes from paper and fabric, as well as produce their own collage materials through ink, paint, and texture rubbings. The workshop will also cover the selection of discarded printed materials for collage use and experimentation with image transfers. Throughout the sessions, participants will work on a series of collages that draw from observation and personal experiences, employing expressive shapes, textures, and colors.
Week 1: The workshop will commence with an introduction to the collage processes that will be explored. Participants will engage in drawing with scissors and tearing paper to create collage compositions, focusing on paper edges, shape, and negative space.
Week 2: Participants will create their own collage materials through texture rubbings, ink pouring, and painting on paper and fabric. Small-size collage compositions will be made on shaped supports, combining self-made materials with colored paper and textures.
Week 3: This week will involve the collection and selection of discarded printed materials, along with experimentation with image transfer methods to further develop thematic and compositional ideas in the participants’ collages.
Week 4: The final week will see participants completing their collage compositions through the application of previously explored techniques and materials. The workshop will conclude with a group discussion about the works created and a reflection on the learning experience.
