At the High Museum in Atlanta, a painting course will be offered for participants possessing an intermediate skill set. This course focuses on painting from life, using the museum’s collection as a source of inspiration. Throughout the sessions, participants will explore various painting techniques including underpainting, sgraffito, and glazing, while studying key elements of art such as color, composition, form, value, and line. There will also be opportunities for peer sharing and feedback from a professional teaching artist.
Week 1: Participants will begin with an overview of the painting methods to be explored and engage in exercises that focus on brushstrokes, form, value, and color mixing.
Week 2: Compositions will be developed from observation, along with instruction on creating an underpainting as participants begin new works on canvas.
Week 3: Participants will continue to study underpainting and will experiment with layers and glazes to deepen their understanding of color theory.
Week 4: Paintings will be created, allowing for either representational or abstract imagery. Participants will select techniques and painting methods suitable for their compositions and personal project goals.
Week 5: Participants will combine selected painting methods from previous classes to further develop their projects. There will be continued focus on color theory, value, and line as they refine the subject, form, and content of their works.
Week 6: The course will conclude with a wrap-up of projects, followed by a final group reflection on the techniques learned and the skills developed throughout the course.
