The High Museum in Atlanta invites participants with an intermediate-level skill set to learn to paint from life while drawing inspiration from the museum’s collection. This program will help individuals develop their artistic styles through a variety of painting techniques such as underpainting, sgraffito, and glazing. Participants will study fundamental elements of art, including color, composition, form, value, and line, and will have opportunities to share their work and receive feedback from a professional teaching artist.
Week 1: An overview of the painting methods to be explored will be provided. Participants will engage in a series of exercises focused on brushstrokes, form, value, and color mixing.
Week 2: Participants will develop compositions from observation and learn how to create an underpainting as they begin a new work on canvas.
Week 3: Continued study of underpainting will take place, alongside experimentation with applying paint in layers and glazes to enhance understanding of color theory.
Week 4: Individuals will create paintings and develop imagery that can be either representational or abstract, choosing techniques and methods that align with their compositions and personal project goals.
Week 5: Participants will combine various painting methods explored in previous sessions to advance their projects. Continued study of color theory, value, and line will support the development of subject, form, and content in their works.
Week 6: The final week will focus on completing projects, followed by a group reflection where participants will discuss the techniques learned and the skills developed throughout the course.
