Unlock Your Artistic Potential: Drawing Essentials at the High Museum of Art

Join the High Museum in Atlanta for an exciting and comprehensive introduction to drawing that invites participants to explore a diverse array of techniques and materials. This program encourages experimentation with lines, mark making, shapes, textures, tones, and composition, allowing attendees to create drawings inspired by observation, imagination, and memory. Participants will learn to apply the principles of design to enhance their compositions.

Guided by the teachings of Betty Edwards, author of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain (1979), participants will develop their skills through various exercises, including contour drawing and discovering the nuances of negative space. This workshop also offers a unique opportunity to draw from still life props and photo references under the mentorship of a professional teaching artist.

Week 1: The journey begins with an introduction to the class, outlining the drawing materials and techniques to be explored. Participants will engage in contour drawings, lines, and mark making.

Week 2: The focus shifts to the significance of shape and value, fostering a deeper understanding of negative space.

Week 3: Participants will create visual textures and experiment with composition while producing drawings from direct observation, imagination, and memory.

Week 4: The final week will involve completing drawings using the techniques learned throughout the course. The program will conclude with a group discussion, reflecting on the artistic journey and the growth experienced over the sessions.

Don’t miss this opportunity to enhance your drawing skills at the High Museum!
