Winter Break at the Southern Museum – Celebrating African Americans in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math
Visitors are invited to participate in an exciting Winter Break program at the Southern Museum, which will celebrate the remarkable contributions of African Americans in STEM fields through engaging activities and crafts.
On February 18, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, attendees can explore the achievements of Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson, and Dorothy Vaughan with “Seeing Stars,” a space-themed craft that highlights their vital roles in science, math, and engineering.
On February 19, guests can drop in for “Stop and Go” and discover the innovative spirit of Garrett Morgan through interactive activities focused on electricity and traffic signals.
February 20, from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, features a special “Mommy and Me” program called “Sew Much Fun.” Smith-Gilbert Gardens will join to lead an art project inspired by Harriet Powers, celebrating her story and the sense of community she fostered.
Finally, on February 21, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, participants can investigate the “Creation of Couplers” with hands-on activities led by the Museum’s Special Collections Team, exploring the invention of the Jenny Coupler.
