Winter Break at the Southern Museum – Celebrating African Americans in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math
The Southern Museum invites families to take part in an exciting Winter Break program that celebrates the remarkable contributions of African Americans in STEM fields through engaging activities and crafts.
On February 18, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, participants can explore the achievements of Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson, and Dorothy Vaughan during the “Seeing Stars” event. This space-themed craft will highlight their vital roles in science, math, and engineering.
February 19 features the “Stop and Go” event, where visitors can discover the innovative spirit of Garrett Morgan through interactive activities centered around electricity and traffic signals.
On February 20, from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, the museum will host a special “Mommy and Me” program called “Sew Much Fun.” Smith-Gilbert Gardens will collaborate on an art project inspired by Harriet Powers, celebrating her story and the sense of community she fostered.
Lastly, on February 21, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, participants can investigate the “Creation of Couplers” with hands-on activities led by the Museum’s Special Collections Team, exploring the invention of the Jenny Coupler.
