The Marietta History Center is excited to announce the opening of its landmark 30th-anniversary exhibition, “Marietta History Center at 30.” This retrospective journey explores the museum’s evolution from its founding in 1996 to its current status as Marietta and Cobb County’s premier history destination, located within the historic Kennesaw House.
The exhibition is organized into four chronological chapters that reflect the museum’s three-decade journey. In addition to a timeline of significant events, the exhibit provides a unique look at the “inner workings” of the museum, introducing visitors to key museum concepts such as the vital role of volunteers and the process for accepting artifacts into the permanent collection.
A significant focus of the exhibit is the Kennesaw House itself. Originally constructed in the 1840s as a cotton warehouse and later converted into the Fletcher House hotel, this historic building survived the Civil War and the burning of Marietta. “Thirty years ago, we began a new museum in this historic landmark,” states Amy Reed, Museum Director. “By starting the museum in this space, we ensured that the building’s history would be preserved alongside the artifacts we hold.”
Through this anniversary exhibition, we celebrate thirty years of preserving our shared memory and reaffirm our commitment to being the stewards of the stories that define us. This celebration aligns with our mission to ignite curiosity in Marietta’s history by connecting people through engaging stories and experiences. We invite the public to join us in honoring our past as we look forward to the next thirty years of discovery.
