A sewing machine class is being offered for individuals new to sewing or hesitant to cut fabric without a pattern. This course focuses on learning the mechanics of piecing while working instinctively—no measuring twice, no patterns, and no defined ways to arrange blocks. Participants will utilize fabric scraps to construct a quilt top from scratch, learning basic terminology and becoming comfortable with the sewing machine. A visit to the museum’s collection will provide insights into how quilters in the past also worked without strict guidelines.
- Week 1: Participants will become oriented with the sewing machine and learn fundamental vocabulary related to piecing, including terms such as seam allowance, pressing, and squaring up. Attendees will begin cutting fabric scraps without a predetermined plan and start assembling blocks based on instinct. A gallery visit will illustrate how improvisation is present in quilts from various historical periods.
- Week 2: The quilt top will continue to be built, block by block, with further comfort developed on the machine. Discussions will explore composition balance, liveliness, and elements such as contrast, repetition, and scale, encouraging attendees to notice their personal preferences in the creative process.
- Week 3: This week focuses on refining constructed pieces by rearranging, adding, or cutting sections apart to enhance overall composition. Participants will complete machine piecing and prepare their quilt tops for hand stitching.
- Week 4: The basics of hand stitching will be taught, adding texture and detail to the completed pieces. Finished quilt tops will be displayed on the wall, fostering a conversation about the various directions taken from the same starting point.
This introductory-level Studio Class is intended for all skill levels. It serves as an excellent starting point for individuals who have not previously participated in an art-making class, offering new skills that can be applied in various artistic practices.
