Exploring Color Theory in Painting – High Museum
AEJuice I Want It All Bundle – Animation Toolkit

The use of color is a fundamental skill in painting. This class is designed to instruct participants on how to mix colors and define hue, value, and saturation through the use of a primary color wheel. Through observation and practical exercises, attendees will gain insight into how colors interact based on proximity, size, location, and quantity in a painting. Participants will also create a series of color compositions that illustrate these principles.

    • Week 1: An introduction to color hue, value, and saturation will be provided. Participants will learn how to prepare a palette for mixing colors using a primary color wheel and will create individual color compositions with primary and secondary colors.
    • Week 2: The focus will shift to mixing secondary and tertiary colors while exploring contrast and harmony in color interactions. Color relationships regarding hue, value, and saturation will be further examined, and a color composition using complementary or contrasting color combinations will be created. Attendees will analyze how size, shape, and placement of color in a painting affect visual perception.
    • Week 3: Participants will learn to saturate and desaturate colors by mixing them with white, black, and gray to create tints, tones, and shades. An abstract color composition will be developed, emphasizing saturated and desaturated colors, as participants begin planning their final color composition.
    • Week 4: The final color composition will be created, integrating the properties of color learned in previous classes. The session will conclude with a reflection on the color compositions created and a discussion on the insights gained throughout the course.

This introductory-level Studio Class is designed to accommodate participants of all skill levels and backgrounds. It provides an excellent starting point for those who may have never taken an art-making class before, equipping them with skills applicable to their artistic practice.

Please note that September 24 is reserved as a makeup date in the event of a session cancellation.
