This program at the Atlanta Botanical Garden introduces young children to the wonders of nature through engaging activities that captivate their interest in the natural world. With a different theme each month, Garden Playtime offers opportunities for sensory engagement and creative expression, making it an enriching experience for families during the spring, summer, and fall.

Free with Garden admission
Suggested ages: 6 months – 5 years. Weather permitting. Cancellations will occur if rain or inclement weather makes outdoor programming impractical. To check the status, email classes@atlantabg.org.
March: Joyful Movement
This month features music, movement, and hands-on activities. Families can participate in a music party, create colorful wind socks, and explore sounds at sensory bins, including instruments made from natural materials.
April: Patterns Everywhere!
In celebration of National Haiku Poetry Day, this session combines art with nature. Participants will explore natural patterns, replicate textures in their artwork, and engage with forest scenes in sensory bins, painting with natural items, and assembling recycled art mosaics.
May: Mythical Creatures
This month invites families to explore the fantastical imagery in Niki de Saint Phalle’s sculptures. Activities will include searching for mermaids and hidden dragon treasures in sensory bins and creating slithering snakes at the art station.
June: Pollinator Friends
In honor of National Pollinator Week, this session focuses on the vital role of pollinators in ecosystems. Participants will engage in a bug tic-tac-toe game, explore “bees in a hive” sensory bins, and create “bug rocks” to take home.
July: Animal Adventures
This month features the lively animal sculptures found in Niki de Saint Phalle’s art. Children are encouraged to dress as animals, create a shared mural, and design a unique animal to take home.
August: Wonderful Water
Exploring the joyful movement of water through Niki de Saint Phalle’s art, this session includes water sensory bins, lily pad art, and frog pond activities on the Children’s Garden lawn. A visit to the Splash Pad is recommended.
September: Golden Grows
In celebration of the Garden’s 50th Anniversary, September’s theme focuses on the golden hues found in the natural landscape. Activities include sunflower art, sensory play with sunflower rice, and painting with corn cobs.
October: Harvest Time
This month’s activities celebrate the harvest season, complete with autumn aromas and the sounds of crunching leaves. Families can enjoy a scavenger hunt for favorite scarecrows in the Garden.
