The Marietta History Center is excited to announce the opening of its landmark 30th-anniversary exhibition, “Marietta History Center at 30.” This retrospective exhibition chronicles the museum’s growth from its founding in 1996 to its current role as Marietta and Cobb County’s home for history, located in the historic Kennesaw House.
Organized into four chronological chapters, the exhibit reflects the museum’s development over the past three decades. It not only serves as a timeline of events but also provides a unique insight into the “inner workings” of the museum. Visitors will learn about critical museum concepts, including the vital role of volunteers and the processes through which artifacts are integrated into the permanent collection.
A key focus of the exhibition is the Kennesaw House itself. Originally constructed in the 1840s as a cotton warehouse and later converted into the Fletcher House hotel, this building notably survived the Civil War and the burning of Marietta. Museum Director Amy Reed states, “Thirty years ago, we began a new museum in this historic landmark. By starting the museum in this space, we ensured that the building’s history would be protected alongside the artifacts we house.”
Through this anniversary exhibition, we celebrate thirty years of preserving our collective memory and reaffirm our commitment to stewarding the stories that define us. This celebration aligns with our mission to ignite curiosity about Marietta’s history by connecting people through compelling stories and engaging experiences.
