The Marietta History Center proudly announces the opening of its landmark 30th-anniversary exhibition, “Marietta History Center at 30.” This retrospective journey highlights the museum’s evolution from its founding in 1996 to its present status as the home for history in Marietta and Cobb County, located within the historic Kennesaw House.
The exhibition is organized into four chronological chapters that reflect the museum’s development over three decades. It goes beyond a simple timeline, providing visitors with a unique insight into the “inner workings” of the museum. Attendees will learn about essential museum concepts, including the vital role of volunteers and the process of accepting artifacts into the permanent collection.
One area of special focus is the Kennesaw House, originally built in the 1840s as a cotton warehouse and later transformed into the Fletcher House hotel. The building remarkably survived the Civil War and the burning of Marietta. Museum Director Amy Reed notes, “Thirty years ago, we began a new museum in this historic landmark. By establishing the museum in this space, we ensured that the building’s history would be preserved alongside the artifacts we house.”
Through this anniversary exhibition, we celebrate thirty years of preserving our collective memory and reaffirm our commitment to being stewards of the stories that define us. This celebration aligns with our mission to ignite curiosity in Marietta’s history by connecting people through compelling stories and engaging experiences. We invite the public to join us in honoring our past while looking forward to the next thirty years of discovery.
