The High Museum of Art will participate in the national tour of Amy Sherald’s mid-career retrospective, marking the largest exhibition of her work to date. This presentation will encompass a diverse array of paintings created between 2007 and 2024, including many of Sherald’s most recognized pieces, as well as rarely viewed works from throughout her career.
Amy Sherald, originally from Columbus, Georgia, has significant ties to Atlanta and the High Museum. After training as a painter in Atlanta, she graduated from Clark Atlanta University. In 2018, the High Museum honored her with the annual David C. Driskell Prize in African American Art and Art History, the first national award recognizing the significance of African American art. In 2022, the museum showcased The Obama Portraits Tour, which featured her acclaimed portrait of former First Lady Michelle Obama.
This exhibition represents the fourth and final venue of its tour, organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), where it debuted in 2024. It previously visited the Whitney Museum of American Art. Following its tenure in Atlanta, the exhibition will be displayed at the Baltimore Museum of Art from November 2, 2025, to April 5, 2026.
