The High Museum of Art will host Amy Sherald’s mid-career retrospective, which is the largest exhibition of her work to date. This exhibition will showcase a broad range of paintings created between 2007 and 2024, including many of Sherald’s most iconic works as well as rarely seen pieces from her career.
Amy Sherald, born in Columbus, Georgia, has significant ties to Atlanta and the High Museum. She trained as a painter in Atlanta and holds a degree from Clark Atlanta University. In 2018, the High Museum awarded her the annual David C. Driskell Prize in African American Art and Art History, recognizing the importance of African American art. The museum also featured her renowned portrait of former First Lady Michelle Obama during The Obama Portraits Tour in 2022.
This retrospective at the High Museum represents the fourth and final venue for the exhibition, which was organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) and debuted there in 2024. It previously traveled to the Whitney Museum of American Art. The exhibition is scheduled to be on view at the Baltimore Museum of Art from November 2, 2025, to April 5, 2026, before arriving in Atlanta.
