This introductory printmaking class covers collagraphs, monoprints, and relief prints. Participants will learn safe cutting and carving techniques, experiment with texture, design stamps, create collage plates, and practice various inking methods to produce individual impressions and editions. The course will include processes in pattern design, hand printing, utilizing an etching press, and inking plates with multiple colors, with an emphasis on developing personal expression through line, texture, color, and composition.
- **Week 1:** The class will begin with an introduction and an overview of the printmaking methods to be explored. Participants will practice safe carving methods and create designs using lines, shapes, and visual textures for stamping on paper and fabric.
- **Week 2:** Collage and printmaking techniques will be combined to create collagraphs. Participants will use collage materials to make unique printing plates with raised and textured surfaces.
- **Week 3:** A painterly approach to inking collagraph plates will be explored, manipulating ink with brushes, rags, and other tools prior to printing. Participants will enhance subsequent prints using stencils and other media and will begin planning their compositions for final prints.
- **Week 4:** A small edition of prints will be produced, combining techniques and plates created in earlier sessions. The class will conclude with reflections on the work and discussions about the learning experience.
This is an introductory-level studio class designed to accommodate all skill levels. It is suitable for individuals who have not previously taken an art-making class. Participants will acquire new skills to apply to their artistic practice.
