The High Museum of Art in Atlanta will host a new exhibition titled Martin Puryear: Nexus. Martin Puryear (American, born 1941) has been captivating the public since the 1970s with his beautiful and thought-provoking works, which draw inspiration from global culture, social history, and the natural world. Nexus traces Puryear’s explorations of form, material, and process over the past 50 years, including drawings created during his service in the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone and sculptures featured in Liberty/Libertà, the artist’s U.S. Pavilion exhibition at the 2019 Venice Biennale.

Members are invited to preview the exhibition on Thursday, September 24, 2026, for an exclusive first look.

This fall, the High Museum will be the exclusive Southeast venue for the most comprehensive presentation of Puryear’s career in over two decades. The exhibition includes more than 70 works across a variety of materials and media, including sculptures made from wood, glass, marble, and cast bronze, as well as rarely shown drawings and prints. This presentation offers a fresh perspective on Puryear’s influential work, highlighting his engagement with material culture, craft traditions, African American history, and science. The exhibition also reveals the expressive potential of Puryear’s art, which invites attention and reflection through masterful craft, enigmatic forms, and quiet poetic beauty.

Preregistration is required for the exhibition. Visitors are advised to arrive at their designated time to help prevent overcrowding in the galleries. Registration can be completed by clicking the button on the High Museum’s website or by calling Member Services at 404-733-4575 (available Monday–Friday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.).
