The High Museum of Art will participate in the national tour for Amy Sherald’s mid-career retrospective, marking the largest exhibition of her work to date. This exhibition will feature a diverse range of paintings created from 2007 to 2024, showcasing both Sherald’s well-known pieces and rarely seen works throughout her career.
Amy Sherald, born in Columbus, Georgia, has strong connections to Atlanta and the High Museum. She trained as a painter in the city and graduated from Clark Atlanta University. In 2018, the museum honored her with the annual David C. Driskell Prize in African American Art and Art History, the first national recognition of its kind for African American art. Sherald’s renowned portrait of former First Lady Michelle Obama was presented as part of The Obama Portraits Tour at the High in 2022.
This retrospective will be the fourth and final venue for the exhibition, which is organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) where it debuted in 2024. It previously traveled to the Whitney Museum of American Art. Following its time in Atlanta, the exhibition will be on view at the Baltimore Museum of Art from November 2, 2025, to April 5, 2026.
