The High Museum of Art will be hosting Amy Sherald’s mid-career retrospective, marking the largest exhibition of her work to date. This exhibition will showcase a diverse collection of paintings created between 2007 and 2024, including many of Sherald’s most well-known pieces as well as rarely seen works that span her career.
Amy Sherald, who was born in Columbus, Georgia, has significant connections to Atlanta and the High Museum. She received her painting education in Atlanta and is a graduate of Clark Atlanta University. The High awarded her the 2018 David C. Driskell Prize in African American Art and Art History, the first national prize to highlight the significance of African American art. Additionally, the museum exhibited The Obama Portraits Tour, which featured her acclaimed portrait of former First Lady Michelle Obama, in 2022.
This exhibition will be the fourth and final venue for the retrospective, organized by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), where it initially debuted in 2024, having previously traveled to the Whitney Museum of American Art. Following its run at the High, the exhibition will be displayed at the Baltimore Museum of Art from November 2, 2025, to April 5, 2026, before concluding its national tour.
