A Solo Exhibition in the Terri Strickland Cole Galleries

Celestial Perspectives is an installation-based exhibition featuring textile artwork by Jess Self. This exhibition transforms the gallery space into a multi-dimensional portal. The intricately hand-woven pieces use a variety of patterns and techniques, echoing the pulsating code of the Matrix—serving as both a cosmic map and a textile labyrinth. Visitors are invited to explore the installation, slowing down to engage with the symbolic language of color, material, and form. The experience encourages viewers to navigate the space physically and psychologically, moving between veils, encountering figures, and reflecting on the blurred boundaries between timelines, histories, and selves.

About the Artist:
Jess Self is a sculptor and educator based in Decatur, GA. Her work examines materiality, archetypes, and cultural narratives through the use of wax, wool, wood, and textiles. By merging craft traditions with storytelling, her figurative sculptures delve into spirituality and the human experience. She holds an MFA in Sculpture from Georgia State University and a BFA from Warren Wilson College. Her exhibitions span both national and international venues, including solo shows at the Hudgens Center for the Arts, Echo Contemporary, and the Loudon House, as well as group exhibitions like ArtFields. She has received numerous accolades, including the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant and the Hudgens Prize Finalist Award. In addition to her studio practice, Self teaches at the University of North Georgia, offering courses in textiles, sculpture, and design that combine technical skill with conceptual depth, fostering an appreciation for craft in contemporary art. Self continues to evolve her work as she explores the intersections of history, materiality, and human narratives, challenging the boundaries between traditional craft and contemporary sculpture.
