Event Announcement: Razing Cane: The Destruction of Rivercane & the Effect on the Ecosystem of the Southeast
Alan Toney, Master Naturalist, will lead a discussion exploring the historical significance of Giant Rivercane, which once spanned approximately 10 million acres in the Southeastern United States and played a vital role in Native American culture. The event will address the transformation of Rivercane, which formed dense thickets known as canebrakes, and the impact of its decline on local wildlife.
The discussion will include a look at existing remnants along the Chattahoochee River and in downtown Sandy Springs, as well as considerations for potential restoration of these ecosystems.
