Celestial Perspectives by Jess Self – Marietta

A Solo Exhibition at the Terri Strickland Cole Galleries

Celestial Perspectives is an installation-based exhibition of textile artwork by Jess Self, transforming the gallery space into a multi-dimensional portal. This exhibit features intricately hand-woven pieces created using a variety of patterns and techniques, mimicking the pulsating code of the Matrix as both a cosmic map and a textile labyrinth. Visitors are invited to wander through the installation, engaging with the symbolic language of color, material, and form. The experience encourages both physical and psychological navigation, where viewers pass through veils, encounter figures, and contemplate the delicate boundaries between timelines, histories, and identities.

About the Artist:
Jess Self, a sculptor and educator based in Decatur, GA, explores materiality, archetypes, and cultural narratives through her work with wax, wool, wood, and textiles. Integrating craft traditions and storytelling, her figurative sculptures delve into spirituality and the human experience. Self holds an MFA in Sculpture from Georgia State University and a BFA from Warren Wilson College. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including solo shows at the Hudgens Center for the Arts, Echo Contemporary, and the Loudon House, as well as group exhibitions, such as ArtFields. Recognized with awards like the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant and the Hudgens Prize Finalist Award, she also teaches at the University of North Georgia, leading courses in textiles, sculpture, and design. Through her mentorship and workshops, she fosters a deeper appreciation for craft in contemporary art. Jess’s artistic journey continues as she investigates the intersection of history, materiality, and human narratives, pushing the limits of traditional craft and contemporary sculpture.
