Exhibition Title: Celestial Perspectives
This installation-based exhibition features textile artwork by Jess Self that transforms the gallery into a multi-dimensional portal. The intricately hand-woven pieces utilize various patterns and techniques, resembling the pulsing code of the Matrix—a cosmic map and a textile labyrinth. The installation encourages visitors to wander through the space, inviting them to slow down and engage with the symbolic language of color, material, and form. Attendees will navigate both physically and psychologically, moving between veils, encountering figures, and contemplating the boundaries between timelines, histories, and selves.
Artist Information:
Jess Self is a sculptor and educator based in Decatur, GA. Her work explores materiality, archetypes, and cultural narratives through mediums such as wax, wool, wood, and textiles. By weaving together craft traditions and storytelling, her figurative sculptures delve into spirituality and the human experience. Self earned her MFA in Sculpture from Georgia State University and her BFA from Warren Wilson College. She has exhibited both nationally and internationally, with solo shows at venues such as the Hudgens Center for the Arts, Echo Contemporary, and the Loudon House, and group exhibitions including ArtFields. Her accolades include the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant and recognition as a Hudgens Prize Finalist. Additionally, she teaches at the University of North Georgia, offering courses in textiles, sculpture, and design, where she emphasizes the interplay of technical skill and conceptual depth. Self continues to innovate in her work, exploring the connections between history, materiality, and human narratives, while pushing the boundaries of traditional craft and contemporary sculpture.
